Volunteer Opportunities

Memorial Day Volunteers
We have many opportunities to serve during the week leading up to Memorial Day and during the Memorial Day celebration . We need help placing veteran markers, assisting people on the grounds to decorate and directing people to graves.  If you want to serve as an individual or if you have a group that would like to serve together, please call to sign up for a scheduled time at 515-289-2230.

Spring and Fall Annual Cleaning Days
Details coming soon.

On Call Volunteers
We are in need of a few individuals to help us serve our families that can’t care for loved ones’ graves due to age or mobility issues. Duties may include 1) trimming around the memorial with hand clippers or trimmer– no trenching allowed; 2) sweeping and washing off memorials with non-abrasive cleaner (we suggest dishwashing liquid) and 3) cleaning out the vases and vase holes. Volunteers may determine their availability and how many requests they would like to accept. For more information, please contact the office at 515-289-2230.

Learning Opportunities

We take great pride and planning in taking care of our grounds at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The historic Tower of Memories is the central landmark of the cemetery and each individual garden provides its own limestone feature or monument surrounded by beautiful and colorful perennial gardens. We welcome classroom and homeschool field trips to visit our gardens to learn about history, plant life, photography, science and art. To schedule a time to visit, please call the office at 515-289-2230.

Outdoor Classroom Learning
Spend time finding graves using GPS coordinates.

  • Does someone buried here have the same name as you?

Use your math skills to calculate the ages of the loved ones buried at HMG.

  • Who was the youngest/oldest person buried in this section/row?
  • How old would a person be if they were alive today?

Photography and Art
Changing shadows throughout the day allows for stunning photo opportunities and still-life artwork. Bring your camera – bring your sketchpads – come alone or with friends. Then share your work with us!

We ask that you schedule your visits with us in advance so that learning does not disrupt services on the grounds.
