Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery’s Board of Directors and Staff & the Highland Park American Legion Post 374 invite you to attend our annual Memorial Day Celebration Monday, May 29, beginning at 8:45am. Due to restoration work being done on our Tower of Memories, the location for this year’s event has been changed to the southwest corner of the cemetery, known as Atonement Garden. Bring your lawn chairs & join us as we honor our veterans.

The program will begin with the playing of bagpipes, followed by an honor guard from the Iowa Patriot Guard Riders entering the cemetery on their motorcycles at 8:55am. The Memorial Day Program, jointly presented by Highland Park Legion Post 374 & Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, begins at 9am with the reading of the names of veterans buried here at HMG since Memorial Day 2022. This will include a gun salute and taps. Refreshments follow the service.

Our “Avenue of Flags is a dramatic display of 5’ x 9.5’ ceremonial veteran burial flags placed every 25-feet on both sides of the cemetery streets extending more than two miles. These will be flying Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. In addition we honor our 3800+ known veterans with individual flags marking each of their graves, which are lovingly placed by cemetery staff & volunteers.

In case of inclement weather, we will notify the public via our email list, WHO Radio, KCCI TV, and WHO TV, regarding an alternate location.
